The Challenges Blended Families Face

Sound familiar? You're not alone.

The 'Who Gets What' Minefield

Your kids from your first marriage. Your spouse's kids. Your kids together. Previous court orders. Child support obligations. Without careful planning, someone gets left out — or fights happen.

The Step-Parent Dilemma

You love your stepkids. But what happens if you die and your spouse remarries? Does your money eventually go to your stepkids, or to your spouse's future family? It's an uncomfortable question with no default good answer.

The Ex Factor

You don't want your ex-spouse anywhere near your assets. But if your child inherits directly and is still a minor... guess who might end up managing that money?

The Family Court Collision

Existing custody agreements, child support orders, and divorce decrees all affect what you can do. A generic estate plan ignores all of this.

How We Protect Blended Families

Specialized solutions for YOUR situation.

Customized Trust Structures

Separate trusts for separate bloodlines if needed. Your assets go to YOUR children. Your spouse is protected but so is your legacy. We design structures that prevent future conflicts.

QTIP Trusts for Spouses

Your surviving spouse can use the assets during their lifetime, but when they pass, it goes to YOUR children — not a future spouse or their family. Peace of mind for everyone.

Clear Guardian Instructions

If you have kids with an ex-spouse, custody likely goes to them. But we can document preferences for temporary emergencies, include provisions for stepparents, and plan for worst-case scenarios.

Coordination with Existing Orders

We review your divorce decree, custody agreements, and any child support orders to ensure your estate plan doesn't conflict with legal obligations.

"My kids, his kids, our kid together — we had no idea how to protect everyone fairly. Legacy Dad walked us through it step by step. Now everyone is protected and we don't have to worry about family drama after we're gone."

Questions Blended Families Ask

Do my stepchildren automatically inherit from me?
No. Under Texas law, stepchildren have no automatic inheritance rights unless you legally adopt them or specifically include them in your estate plan. If you want them protected, you must plan for it.
How do we balance fairness between 'his,' 'hers,' and 'ours' kids?
This is deeply personal. Some families do equal splits, others weight based on relationship length or financial need. We'll help you think through the options and document your wishes clearly.
My ex-spouse is the other parent of my child. Can they control my child's inheritance?
Not if you set up a trust with an independent trustee. Without a trust, if your child is a minor, their other parent (your ex) could have control over their inheritance. A trust prevents this.
What if my spouse and I disagree about how to divide things?
Prenuptial/postnuptial agreements can help, but estate planning is often the place to work this out. We facilitate these conversations all the time — you're not the first blended family to navigate this.
